Service Families Benefit from CMI Membership

The Chartered Management Institute has pledged to support Service spouses and partners in gaining the leadership qualifications to help them further their career.

Ensuring that Service spouses and partners are not disadvantaged in finding and staying in employment due to service life is a key part of the Armed Force Covenant, which states that: The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly. The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has sought to uphold this promise by signing the Armed Forces Covenant. In their pledges, the CMI support Service spouses and civil partners through their MOD Family Membership Scheme, which provides access to Leadership, Mentoring and Coaching qualifications, helping Service spouses to gain the key skills and professional recognition which can help Service family members to find employment. The Scheme is also available free to children of Service personnel (aged 16-18) and allows them to become a Campus CMI Affiliate with access to all the benefits of online resources, including study support.

CMI’s pledge offers a discount on their qualifications and membership for family members of Service personnel who are CMI members, and a commitment to support Service spouses or Reservists who they employ with flexible working arrangements, where possible. Chief of Defence People, Lieutenant General Richard Nugee is a CMI companion and participated in the signing of the Covenant at an event on 14 November. He said:
“The families of our Service personnel are an important part of the Covenant. We value and are grateful to them – the unsung heroes who support our Armed Forces. Knowing that the nation, and organisations like the Chartered Management Institute recognises this is extremely important and fundamental in making the Armed Forces Covenant work.”

Ann Francke, Chief Executive of the Chartered Management Institute said:
“We’re proud to sign the Armed Forces Covenant, and helping families of the heroic men and women who serve our country get the support they need to develop their careers. Thousands of members of the Armed Forces who’ve gained CMI-accredited qualifications have benefited from improved performance in their roles, as well as from building confidence and gaining qualifications to help them resettle into civilian life at the end of their military career. Now, their families also have the chance to develop their own skills and qualifications.”

Full details on what membership can offer military families can be found on the CMI website at www.managers.org.uk/mod-membership.

Military Personnel: Thinking of Doing a Course?

22.      Standard Learning Credit (SLC) Service personnel may make SLC claims each financial year for 80% of any course fees; up to a maximum of £175 per year for approved vocational and academic courses.  This is a “use it or lose it” allowance, as the funding does not roll-over into the next financial year. Before starting any course, individuals must obtain prior approval.  Further details can be found in JSP 898 Pt 4 Chapt 4 or by contacting your local Education Centre Staff for further information/guidance.

Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) The ELC allowance provides funding support to Service personnel who want to enhance their educational or vocational achievements for long-term personal development.  It may only be used to gain National Qualification Level 3 or higher qualifications. (i.e. A Level & some NVQ Level 4 or 5, 1st Degree, Post Graduate studies and Doctorate)  Candidates must have registered while serving and strict criteria apply when making a claim. Depending on a number of factors, this can amount to up to as much as £2000 per year, over a 3 year course. Again, individuals must both have registered and made their claim prior to starting any course.  Also, provided you registered whilst still serving , you may also claim for up to 10 years after leaving the service. See JSP 898 Pt 4 Chapt 3 for details or visit http://www.enhancedlearningcredits.com/  or contact your local Education Centre Staff for further information/guidance.

Staffordshire New Charges for Non-Household Waste

Small charges to cover the cost of recycling non-household waste will be introduced tomorrow, November 1st at Staffordshire’s household waste recycling centres.
Certain waste generated by DIY, home improvements or extensive landscaping of gardens, such as soil and rubble, or sinks and toilets, or plasterboard, is not legally regarded as household rubbish and we will be making a small charge to cover the cost of processing it.
A big bag of soil and or rubble, or a sink or toilet, will cost £3; plasterboard will cost £4 per sheet or big bag; and tyres will cost £4 each.
The centres will continue to take domestic waste free of charge. This includes materials like hedge clippings or a few tree branches, mattresses, electrical appliances and household furniture.

The Royal British Legion's Birmingham Memorial Walk

The Royal British Legion will be launching their EXCITING new venture on Wednesday 2nd November during Birmingham Poppy Day

A self-guided Booklet for the walk is available from their Pop In Centre at 87 New Street (by Victoria Square, Birmingham) & includes a list of the significant remembrance sites across the city that the walk takes in. There is a description of each site, simple directions and a double-page colour map.
The walk starts and finishes at The royal British Legion ‘Pop-In Centre’ situated at 87 New Street, in Birmingham City Centre.

The City has always had strong links with the Armed Forces - Birmingham men served aboard many of Nelson’s ships at Trafalgar and during the First world war 150,000 men from the City served in the armned forces of whom over 12,000 were killed. Birmingham has wealth of memorials that commemorate the men and women of Birmingham who proudly served their country.
The walk includes a list of places to visit, a brief description of what there is of interest, simple directions and for the younger walkers, a quiz sheet to complete if they wish?

Our objective is to provide visitors with an interesting self-guided walk around the city centre, visiting sites connected with Birmingham’s military heritage, and seeing the memorials to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

If you would like to be one of the first people to undertake the walk on launch day, please contact westmidlands@britishlegion.org.uk

Do you live in Staffordshire and have a child/children under the age of 18?

Below are links to two questionnaires which will take no more than 5 minutes of your time. Your participation will help enormously in providing data for a funding application. If you are eligible to take part, and respond before the end of September 2016, you will be entered into a draw for a £100 Amazon voucher as a thank you for your time.

The Signals Regiment is representing the Army as a partner on a funding bid, alongside The University of Wolverhampton, Staffordshire County Council and key employers in the region. The application is to the Department for Education for permission and funding to build and open a brand new University Technical College (UTC) in Stafford, offering 14-18 year olds specialist technical education alongside the national curriculum. The new UTC will teach the national curriculum, with a particular emphasis on STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

The application requires us to show whether parents would support the establishment of this type of school in Staffordshire and also if potential pupils would want to attend a specialist school such as this. We would be extremely grateful if you and your child(ren) would complete one of the following online surveys:

For parents of children under the age of 18:  https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/parentsofpupils
For pupils under the age of 18, to be completed with adult supervision:  https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/schoolpupils
